One of the first things I ever knitted was a pair of socks... tube socks... but they still required double pointed needles! I enjoy using the double pointed needles to make socks, although they do require a bit of dexterity! I eventually learned how to make socks with heels and have since made several pairs. They're fairly time consuming, and slightly boring until you get to the heel, but pick a pattern with a good design (cable, lace, etc.) and it helps them move along!
These socks are great. I've made several pairs with Paton's Classic Wool. They're a little thick, but just enough to make a nice boot sock. The other great thing is that they felt while you wear them, conforming to your foot and reinforcing the usual weak spots in socks... especially the heel.
These are the first socks I made with a heel. My friend found a book with a basic pattern for fine, worsted and chunky yarned socks. I actually was able to finish these in an afternoon. I used Wool-Ease Chunky.
These are a pair of pedicure socks made with Patons stretch sock yarn and their accompanying pattern I picked up at Catan's. Stretchy, and a little wooly... except your toes are exposed so they'll probably get cold!
